A team game report: GF 1-8 Scotia

Friday October 24
Glens Falls 1-8 Scotia

The A team was defeated 8-1 in their final game, for their only home loss of the season. Although the score was lopsided, the Indians played reasonably well for most the game and were especially strong to begin the second half. But they had the misfortune of running into an excellent Scotia team at the top of their game. Sean Hooker scored for the GF on a breakaway off a through ball from John Benjamin. Nate Didio had his best game of the season at forward.

SCORING
56'-Sean Hooker (John Benjamin)

A team game report: GF 4-0 HF

Saturday October 18
Glens Falls 4-0 Hudson Falls

The A team offered a spirited, 60-minute performance in dominating Hudson Falls 4-0. The scoring opened a few minutes into the game when a cross was deflected by a defender to Heath Armstrong who put it past the keeper. The lead was double several minutes later when Sam Butz tapped an indirect free kick to Kyle McMurtry who blasted past the keeper. McMurtry scored in the second quarter and he smashed home a cross from Sean Hooker. McMurtry played a cross to Evan McLaughlin who made an excellent turn and finish for the only goal of the second half. Fran Daugherty created all kinds of problems for HF's defense in his first start at forward. The Indians' team defense was so solid that it held the Tigers without a shot on goal the entire game for the squad's third shutout of the season.

A team game report: SGF 4-1 GF

Thursday October 16
South High 4-1 Glens Falls

The A team mostly slept through a 4-1 loss to South High. The Bulldogs were up 3-0 after a first half where the Indians were lacking in team shape and especially energy. The A team woke up in the fourth quarter and played fairly well. Mike Kenny got the Indians' only goal of the game late in the game off a pass from Sam Butz. Kenny's goal was GF's only shot on goal of the game.

A team game report: GF 1-1 Qby

Tuesday October 14
Glens Falls 1-1 Queensbury

The A team tied Queensbury after overtime in an affair that was wide open despite the 1-1 scoreline. The Indians played poorly in the first quarter in yet another slow start. But they controlled most of the rest of the game. The Spartans scored in the first quarter on a fluke goal, but keeper Spencer Bray made up for it with three fantastic saves later in the game and a season high 11 stops throughout the match. Kyle McMurtry evened it up in the third quarter when he got ahold of a bouncing ball and lashed into the net. GF had several good chances following that but could not put the ball in the net.

A team game report: GF 7-0 Johnstown

Thursday October 2
Glens Falls 7-0 Johnstown

The A team became the first A team ever to win their first four games of the season when they beat Johnstown 7-0. The Indians dominated the first half, outshooting the Sir Bills 10-1, but couldn't put the ball in the net due to suspect finishing and good goalkeeping. But in the opening minute of the second half, the Johnstown keeper fumbled a shot and Sean Hooker was there to poke home the rebound. Hooker ended with two goals and an assist on the evening to continue his scoring rampage: he has at least two points in every game this season. Seven minutes later, Hooker took a cross from Tyler Mello and one-touch flicked it to Kyle McMurtry who finished the counterattack with a nice goal. The Indians overwhelmed Johnstown in the fourth quarter with five goals, including another goal scored directly off a free kick by McMurtry. In the quarter. John Benjamin and Fran Daughterty scored their first ever modified goals, while Evan McLaughlin scored his first of the season. Spencer Bray recorded his second consecutive shutout. It was a great second half by the Indians who will need a similar performance next Tuesday against a top-class Scotia team.

A team game report: GF 3-0 BP

Monday September 29
Glens Falls 3-0 Broadalbin-Perth

The A team went to 3-0 on the season with a 3-0 blanking of Broadalbin-Perth. The Indians nearly scored on a sequence mid-way through the first quarter when they hit the crossbar twice in a scramble in close and the Patriots' goalie stopped the third shot. The breakthrough came when Sean Hooker played the ball from the wing to Evan McLaughlin who one touched to Kyle McMurtry who slotted it past the keeper for his first goal of the season. In the third quarter, the two combined for a nearly identical goal. Two minutes later, Sean Hooker rounded off the scoring as he headed a perfectly placed pass from Mike Kenny into the goal. Spencer Bray made 8 saves for the team's first shutout of the season.

A team game report: HF 1-6 GF

Thursday, September 25
Hudson Falls 1-6 Glens Falls

The A team improved to 2-0 on the year by thrashing Hudson Falls 6-1. HF opened the scoring when one of their players powered through the entire defense. But the Indians' defense tightened up and that goal was Hudson Falls' only shot on goal in the entire game. Tanner Sax tied it up a few minutes later with a shot that beat the keeper to the near post off a pass from Kyle McMurtry. The Indians took control of the game in the 2nd quarter with a pair of goals and dominated the rest of the game. Heath Armstrong and Sam Butz each had a pair of goals, with Mike Kenny scoring right before half time. Butz's and Sax's goals were their first ever in a Glens Falls shirt. Sean Hooker and Evan McLaughlin combined for five assists on the afternoon. John Benjamin did a fantastic job controlling the pace of the game and distributing from the holding midfield position.

A team scrimmage report: GF 2-4 South High

Monday September 22
Glens Falls 2-4 South High

Sean Hooker scored pair of quick goals mid-way through the second quarter to give the Indians a 2-0 lead, but South High scored the last four goals to win the scrimmage 4-2. GF gave their best performance of the year so far. But they continue to need to improve their concentration and cut back on mental mistakes. Spencer Bray was fantastic in goal, making 20 saves.

Men of the match: Spencer Bray and Sean Hooker

No official stats kept in a scrimmage.

A team scrimmage report: Queensbury 2-0 GF

Friday September 19
Queensbury 2-0 Glens Falls

Although the A team fell 0-2 in this scrimmage to a good Queensbury team, they showed a vastly improved performance over the previous contest. The Indians were rampant in the second quarter but couldn't find the net. The defense, led by Joe Nichols and John Benjamin, was solid throughout. The defense only made three mistakes in the contest, but two of them led to goals. This underlines the importance of concentrating for the entire 60 minutes. The A team will need to continue its improvement next week against a quality South High team.

Man of the match: Kyle McMurtry

Note: No official stats kept in a scrimmage

B team game report: Queensbury 7-0 GF

Friday September 19
Queensbury 7-0 Glens Falls

The B team struggled in this loss to Queensbury. Evan Abess played well for the Indians and goalkeeper Patrick Round made several point blank saves.

A team game report: GF 7-1 Gloversville

Thursday, September 18
Glens Falls 7-1 Gloversville

The A team labored to a 7-1 win in their season opener against Gloversville. Sean Hooker had a pair of goals, including an opportunistic finish after the keeper fumbled a shot. Kyle McMurtry scored directly off a 30 yard free kick and set up Hooker's first goal off a corner. Jack Girard tore up and down the right flank from the back while central defenders John Benjamin and Jake Zanoni combined to limit Gloversville's scoring chances to almost none. However, the Indians will have to improve its spacing and concentration dramatically if it's to have success against stronger teams.

Note: ' means minute and () means assist so 4'-Hooker (McMurtry) means Hooker scored in the 4th minute with an assist from McMurtry.

Ball boy assignments (updated 9/25)

The modified teams will be providing ballboys for JV and varsity games.

Ballboys should report to Morse Fields by 4:00 on the day of their assignment (or 12:45 on a Saturday).

Those assigned to the varsity game should introduce themselves to Coach Shaver on the varsity field (the one closest to the exit of the complex). Those assigned to the JV game should introduce themselves to Coach Turner on the JV field (the one directly in front of the fieldhouse). Or you can just ask around if you don't know the coach in question.

Players do not have to wear their soccer gear to be a ballboy. Players will be excused from modified practice on days they assigned to be ballboys and do not have to show up at Kensington. But because of this, they MUST report to Morse at 4:00 and they must serve the ENTIRE game as a ballboy. Varsity/JV games typically last until 5:30-5:45. Those who are assigned and do not show up or leave early without a valid reason will be considered as having SKIPPED practice. Players are responsible for remembering their assigned game!

If a player knows in advance he will be unable to be a ballboy on the date in question for whatever reason, he should contact Coach Farenell in advance.

Sept. 9 GF vs. Broadalbin-Perth: Kyle McMurtry and Evan McLaughlin

Sept. 20 GF vs Queensbury: Sam Butz and Heath Armstrong (varsity at high school). Mike Kenny and Tyler Mello (JV at Morse).

Sept. 26 GF vs Hudson Falls: John Benjamin and Tanner Sax (varsity), Steve Feeney and Jack Girard (JV).

Oct. 6 GF vs Scotia: Four B team players TBA

Oct. 8 GF vs Gloversville: Spencer Bray and Brandon Burrows (varsity), Nate Didio and Fran Dougherty (JV).

Oct. 15 GF vs SGF: Four B team players TBA

A note on injuries and rest

REST
Players are expected to work hard at practice. As a result, it's important that they take sufficient rest to allow their bodies time to recover. If this doesn't happen, players may become more easily injured. Players should make sure they take one day a week where they take it easy from physical activity.

INJURIES
Players should inform their coaches of any injury, however seemingly small. The coach will then determine if the player can continue or if he should rest or seek treatment. If a parent thinks that his son is hiding an injury, please inform the coach so he can determine the appropriate course of action. Do not hide your injury!

Monday, September 1, 2008

Important information about absences, getting picked up, medical stuff and other misc. (2008)

-If a player knows in advance that he is going to miss practice(s) and/or game(s) for whatever reason, please inform the coach a day or two before. If a player leaves school early because of sickness, also please email the coach if possible.

-Please be prompt in picking your son up after games/practices or make sure other arrangements are made.

-Any asthma inhalers, bee sting kits, diabetes pumps or other medical stuff should be brought to every game and practice, clearly labeled with your son's name and left out in the open (NOT inside a backpack). If your son has an extra one, PLEASE give it to the coach to keep in the medical kit.

-Parents and players should feel free to contact the coaches at any time and for any reason. Please don't wait until problems fester. The earlier the coaches know what's going on, the earlier any problems can be addressed.

-Please note that schedules are always subject to change. Check the team calendar for the most up to date information.

Important information about academics (2008)

-Players are expected to prioritize school before soccer and to maintain reasonable grades.

-They will have to show the coaches their progress report when issued. A player with 1 D has a week to demonstrate that progress is being made to remedy the situation; if not, then the player will not play. A player with either 2 D’s or 1 F will immediately no longer be able to play until they’ve demonstrated that progress is being made to remedy the situation. But since the coaches don’t want any player to reach that point...

-If a parent thinks their son is struggling to maintain this balance or has other issues the coach should know about, please contact his coach. Coaches will be happy to make accommodations for any player who needs extra academic help.

Important information about fans (2008)

-We expect fans to be supportive of and encouraging to the players. Fans should refrain from yelling instructions to players during the game. This confuses players and prevents them from learning the game themselves. Fans who do this or who are abusive to the other team or to the referee will be told to leave.

-Fans should bear in mind that most of our games will have only one referee who will be single-handedly responsible for 22 players, 2 coaches and over 6000 square yards of field.

-Fans should remain positive. This is middle school soccer, not the World Cup. Everyone (players, coaches and referees) will do the best they can.

Important information about games (2008)

-Players should have their own solid black socks and black shorts to wear for games.

-Players must be properly equipped in order to participate in games. This includes the appropriate jersey, black shorts, black socks, shinguards and soccer cleats. Goalkeepers must wear a different color jersey and must have a helmet, mouthguard and goalkeeper gloves. All jerseys as well as the goalkeeper equipment will be handed out by the coaches. Players are NOT allowed to wear bracelets or necklaces during games. The only exception is medical necklaces, which must be taped to the players' chest. If a player is not properly equipped, he will not be allowed to play.

-All players will play every game (unless there are medical or disciplinary reasons). This does not necessarily mean that all players will get equal playing time. The amount of playing time will be at the discretion of the coaches and will be subject to such factors as skill, attitude, practice comportment and the opponent.

-Players will travel on the bus to all away games. Bus departure times will be announced the day before away games and will also be posted on the website. The bus will leave PROMPTLY at the announced time. If the bus leaves before school ends, players will be excused from early from their last class. If a player is late and misses the bus, he is out of luck. A player must travel to and from away games on the team bus, unless he has prior written permission from the athletic office. The bus for away games will leave in the back entrance of the high school (the one with the handicapped entrance) near the tennis courts. Players will be responsible for getting themselves to and from home games.

-Players will be permitted to bring food and drink on the bus to away games, provided they don’t leave a mess. However, players should not bring soda, iced tea, energy drinks, junk food or anything else unhealthy or inappropriate for an athletic competition.

-Most home games will be played at Kensington, although a few may be moved to Morse Fields.

Important information about practices (2008)

-Practices will usually be held Monday-Friday starting at 3:30 PM, typically ending at 5:00 PM. The B team usually won't practice on Wednesdays. All practices at Kensington unless otherwise announced. Several will likely be moved to Crandall Park but that will be announced the day before and posted on the website.

-Regardless of bad weather, players should assume there WILL be practice (or game) unless an announcement is made at school. If a practice is cancelled, it will also be posted on the team website and calendar.

-Players should come to practice prepared with: shorts; red, white or black t-shirt; soccer cleats, socks and shin guards; sufficient water or a sports drink; a soccer ball.

-If players are late to practice because of extra help or other academic reasons, they should get a note from the teacher. If they are late because of a medical appointment, they should get a note either from their doctor or dentist or their parent. If this is known beforehand, the parent can either tell or email the coach in advance.

-All players will practice together for the first several days. After that, they will be split up into A and B teams (NOT 7th and 8th grade teams). All will be part of the GF modified soccer program, just on different levels. All players will be placed on one of the two teams; there will be no cuts. Players may be moved between the A and B teams if circumstances warrant.

Resources for goalkeeping

Below are some good websites for players interested in playing goalkeeper.

KEEPERSTOP
This is a site devoted solely to goalkeepers. You have to register to access the features but it's free. It has training tips, a forum where you can talk to other keepers, a place where you can discuss gloves, etc. It also has a monthly (maybe less often) newsletter you can subscribe to. www.keeperstop.com

FINE SOCCER
This is a general soccer tips site but it has a good keeper section. This also has a newsletter too. General section: finesoccer.com/keepers2.htm. Newsletter: finesoccer.com/emailsubscribe.htm
